Scientists, lawyers, business people, funding agencies, and others working in science, technology, and industry know that “facts don’t speak for themselves.” As in the results section of research reports, scientists make facts speak by designing good tables and figures that accurately and persuasively present the data visually, and then verbally highlight, discuss, and argue for the validity and interpretation, significance, and implications of the data.

This Spring 2016 Semester, the WID Initiative is launching a three-part workshop series on “arguing facts” based on visual design principles, the latest Adobe software, and best writing practices.

Continuing the five WID Initiative Workshop in 2014-2015 AY, and again featuring
Dr. David Blakesley, Campbell Chair of Technical Communication, as well as Co-Directors Steven Katz, Pearce Professor of Professional Communication, and Lesly Temesvari, Professor of Biology, these workshops will all be held on Thursdays so that the same participants can attend; the workshops will build on each other, be interactive, and ultimately focus on improving communication pedagogy across the disciplines.
