Clemson University

Workshop: Media Ethics, Libel and Freedom of Information (FOI)

Trust by the public is vital to the success of any news organization, especially a student newspaper. At this workshop, the executive staff of The Tiger will introduce attendees to media ethics, libel law and freedom of information policy in South Carolina. All Clemson students and staff are welcome to attend, regardless of whether they are joining The Tiger or not.

Media ethics discussion will revolve around the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics, which The Tiger has adopted as its ethical code for all staff members. Libel instruction will cover what is permissible and not under the First Amendment, and common missteps made by new reporters. Lastly, freedom of information (FOI) discussion will cover public records law in South Carolina, which allows all citizens to request records from public institutions across the state, including Clemson.

This training is supported by the South Carolina Press Association, whose slides were created by their attorney, Taylor Smith.
