Talk: Identity research has received an increasing amount of attention in the mathematics research community as it includes the social aspects of student motivation and engagement that various learning theories have shown to be important. I will discuss how mathematics identity is defined and conceptualized in the field as well as the approach I use in operationalizing mathematics identity. In addition, I will highlight why identity is a powerful construct to explore.
