https://www.clemson.edu/emerituscollege/index.htmlThe modern era continues to get more complex, what with all of the new-fangled means of communicating that have matured in recent years. Most everyone is not aware that we are progressing toward a critical moment that scientists in space physics refer to as "Solar Maximum". This is when the Sun becomes very active with multiple solar flares, coronal mass ejection (CME), and even "high speed" solar wind particles. Why should any of this be a concern? I will discuss the various issues regarding what has been called "Space Weather" which touches upon the idea that outer space behaves in a rather disorganized way with storms and particle outbursts being typical over the period of solar maximum. What about the opposite end of the solar cycle which is called "solar minimum"? That is also of considerable interest even though solar flares tend to be somewhat rare in occurrence. I will also discuss the impact that all this might have been life on Earth, which I can assure you tends to be relatively minor. Still, who knows. a Carrington Event might be just around the corner!
