About this Event
This course will explore common coastal plant communities found in South Carolina. The course will take place in the classroom and in the field at Clemson University’s Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science at Hobcaw Barony in Georgetown, SC. Throughout the day, participants will learn about four main ecosystem types: maritime forests, pine woodlands, freshwater swamps, and saltmarshes. Activities for the day could include plant identification, wildlife watching, ecosystem assessment, hiking and using ecology themed apps. We will discuss the ecology of different ecosystem types, impacts of climate change and current research conducted at the course site. Participants should be prepared to spend significant time in the field and hiking in wet and muddy conditions.
Instructor: Lydia O'Halloran, Research Assistant Professor, Forestry and Environmental Conservation Department. Please register by October 17.
