"Computationally Tractable Uncertainty and Flexibility Management in Modern Power Systems" presented by Hongxing Ye, Cleveland State University

Abstract:

The rapid growing penetration of variable energy resources (VERs), such as wind and solar generation, leads to high-level uncertainty in power systems. The uncertainty must be accommodated by flexible resources, including energy storage, load demand management, and generators with large ramping rate. The existing theoretical foundations for electric power networks were developed for traditional infrastructure where accurately-forecast load demand is supplied by large-size and fully controllable generators. The growing expectation of flexibility and uncertainty has been challenging these theories. Due to scale and complexity of power systems, it is extremely challenging to solve associated optimization problems with uncertainty meeting the timeliness requirement in power industry. The seminar will introduce a systematic approach to managing uncertainty and flexibility, from the concept to solution approaches that are fast enough to be applied in the large-size real-world systems. This talk will discuss a novel polynomial approach to approximately solving renewable integration problem that is regarded NP-hard. Its optimality has proved better than those of existing approaches. It is expected to have wide applications to power system resilience and cyber-physical system security. This seminar will also introduce a new pricing scheme for the uncertainty and flexible resources that unlocks the possibility of autonomous uncertainty management.
