SC AAS volunteers can play an important role in monitoring and tracking water quality while sharing information about local water resources with their communities. In providing baseline information about stream conditions, volunteers, local communities, educators, and local government agencies can partner to protect and restore our waters. You do not need to be an environmentalist, fisherman, or scholar to monitor water quality! All are welcome to learn how to collect data that can help protect and restore saltwater streams.
This training will provide in person classroom and hands on instruction for volunteer monitors on how to: select a monitoring site, use testing equipment properly, collect samples, test water quality, enter data, determine stream conditions and practice safety in the field.
Individuals must pass an open book, open note exam at the end of the workshop to become a certified volunteer and be able to enter data into the public database. Volunteers are encouraged to sample saltwater streams monthly to establish valuable data on baseline conditions of your stream.
This is an in person workshop. Part 1 will be held in the classroom at Port Royal Sound Foundation and will last approximately 2 hours. For Part 2, we will head to the dock located on site to learn how to sample and use monitoring equipment. You must attend both parts to become certified.
You will be emailed more information after you complete this interest form (https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=iMQmMzN-G0KPWQmjnCa7qi2wgHLZvbBKknZHjkTCE6xUM1NGNkVQWkY2NTNKM0pYOU5JNVMxU0xWVi4u) for the workshop. The workshop will have a 12 person capacity. Email carterll@dhec.sc.gov if you have questions or would like to suggest an alternate date/time for becoming certified.
