The second session of this three-part moderated symposium will be hosted virtually by the Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston on Sept. 30, 2020.

Civic memorials and monuments are cultural, political and social persuasions. As societal values shift, meanings evolve. Removal of tributes to historical figures, causes and events sparks backlash. Sharp lines are drawn between points of view, igniting that which has simmered below the surface and existed for hundreds of years.

What role does design – architecture, in particular – have in engaging these societal challenges? How can architecture frame or reframe this momentous time?

Moderated by Millicent Brown, Ph.D., the discussions will engage academics, architects, historians and others.

Session 2: The Present will examine “Why did 8:46 minutes make a difference?” Respondents will be Frank Knaack, director of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina, and Antonio Tillis, Ph.D., interim president of the University of Houston-Downtown. The final session in the series will address The Future on Oct. 7.
