Clare Mullaney, Faculty in Disability Rhetorics for Clemson University, this session will be a conversation about the shift from disability rights to disability justice movements. Rather than frame disability as--in the words of poet Audre Lorde--a "single issue," disability justice recognizesdisability as a raced, gendered, and classed category. This session, in particular, will attend to the overlap between histories of race and disability as they relate to everything from diagnostic practices to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on people of color. To conclude, we'll discuss the ramifications of the shift from rights-based discourse to justice for the work we do to support disabled students on campus and the disability community more broadly.
