About this Event
This 4-H project is designed to help youth first ask questions, then seek answers through hands-on activities and to reflect on what they’ve observed. Each activity includes safety tips. Short videos provide a demonstration and explanation of the experiment, cooking, or activity presented in the journal. The main topics covered include: 1) Eggs are Exceptional: The Right Heat for the Eggs You Prepare to Eat; 2) Make Sense of Souffles: Bake a Souffle in an Eggstreme Egg Makeover; and 3) Separating the Curds from the Whey: Prepare Queso Fresco.
Each topic includes information on the science of protein, and review of words to describe the reaction in preparations and cooking. The science behind the functions of eggs from the whipping of egg whites to a recommended stage for a recipe is key to egg preparations. The ingredients added to a dish and the resulting color, taste, texture in recipes will be described. Youth will enjoy learning the science during the hands- on foods prepared and enjoy eating their recipe preparations.
The project is open to all 4-H participants however, due to the hands-on cooking component an adult home kitchen (lab) helper is required. The Youth Science Journal for this project will be provided to participant households.
Registration deadline has been EXTENDED to Monday, October 14, 2024.
Record books will be due to county 4-H agent offices by January 31, 2024.
