Join Clemson Extension Food Systems and Safety agent Chase McIntosh Baillie and Pickins ‘n’ Chickens, local produce grower, at the Lee County Clemson Extension Office at 5 Courthouse Square, Bishopville SC for a hands-on home food preservation class featuring pickling and waterbath and steam processing.
You can bring your own cucumbers and no more than 3 pint jars/lids, or let us provide you with cucumbers and jars.
All other materials and equipment will be provided: brine, spices, canners, jars, etc.
Pressure canner gauges will also be tested as a courtesy to participants.
Canning is an important, safe method of food preservation if practiced properly. The canning process involves placing foods in jars and heating them to a temperature that destroys organisms that could be a health hazard or cause the food to spoil. Participants will be engaged in hands-on activities using current USDA-recommended techniques for preserving foods for home use. Persons with or without experience are encouraged to attend the workshop.
Participants will receive a packet of resources for further reference, the product made during class, and a fun experience.
Participants are asked to wear closed-toed shoes, tie back long hair, and wear a hat if possible. Also, bring a snack and a water bottle.
Should you require special accommodations due to a disability, please notify our office ten days prior to the event.
If there are additional questions, concerns, or barriers to entry, please contact Chase by email @ mcinto3@clemson.edu or by text at 864-650-8602
