https://www.clemson.edu/emerituscollege/index.htmlIn 2006 a new exotic invader was discovered near Clemson, the first record of it in the Savannah Basin. Around 1998 another invasive organism became the agent of death for the American Bald Eagle in the Savannah Basin. In 1991 an invasive organism led to the largest freshwater fish mortality in SC history. In 1972 an invasive organism was first introduced to the Savannah Basin during the filling of Lake Jocassee. It has led to environmental costs for both industry and government. All of the above true stories, and more, are related to aquatic invasive organisms…yet, we are more fascinated or concerned, and rightly-so, about kudzu, feral pigs, armadillos, pear trees, and spiders. This presentation will tease the ‘fear’ centers of your brains with many of the unnoticed or unseen invasive organisms that we often swim with….and occasionally swallow. This presentation will bring these to your attention and in a few cases, poke some fun at ourselves…but especially at our sad inability to plan or cope with many of them. I will focus on the things that occur locally and help the audience experience joy at the absence, for the time being, of other aquatic ‘nasties’. So batten down the hatches, we’re going to have some fun. Contact emerituscollege@clemson.edu for the Zoom link.
