English Dance Workshop at the Emeritus College

  • January 10, 2020 (Friday) 4:00pm – 6:00pm, English Dance Workshop with Dr. Robert Jamison, Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences: If you have ever seen a Jane Austin movie, then you have seen the elegance of English Country Dance.  The form is alive and well with centuries old dances still being enjoyed and new dances being written.   Several years ago Dr. Jamison was invited to give a lecture on mathematics at Erskine College.  He chose Mathematics and Dance as the topic. Although all English dances contain lots of mathematical aspects.  He wrote the dance Trip to Erskine to demonstrate these and designed it to be easy enough for newcomers to dance.  Recently the tune was included in The Barnes Book III of English Country Dance Tunes.  You can find this dance online by clicking HERE. Another of Dr. Jamison’s dances (Princess of Wales, Her Waltz) may be found by clicking HERE (second from the bottom of the list). This informative and participatory (if you choose) workshop will explain, demonstrate, and teach these dances as well as some other easy dances. We hope you can join us for this perfect winter activity! A no-host dinner location will be announced as the date approaches.
