About this Event
Abstract: The stress associated with being a graduate student is a well-known concern and of emerging interest in the scholarly literature. At highest research (R1) universities (Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research (IUCPR), 2015) in the United States graduate students contribute significantly to the research endeavors and mission of the institution but the effect of their contributions on the students’ well-being is only beginning to be studied. One important aspect of overall well-being is the topic of financial stress. At one such institution, a survey distributed to all graduate students in Spring 2021 received 483 responses to an open-ended prompt regarding immediate financial need. Using provisional and open coding techniques, those responses were analyzed to uncover graduate students’ immediate financial need. Themes that emerged will be discussed.
