April 15, 2021 (Thursday) 10:00am – 11:30am, Online Seminar: Adventures in Kenya – from fresh-market vegetables in Nairobi to wildlife of the Maasai Mara with Dr. Vance Baird, Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Horticulture: Low-tech approaches that reduce chemical inputs while improving crop yield, quality and access to new markets, were investigated with small-holder farmers in multiple districts in the Kenyan highlands. These studies, supported by USAID’s “Feed the Future” initiative, also identified barriers to broad adoption and scalability. In addition, opportunities to safari in the rich savannas of the Maasai Mara (the northern portion of the same ecosystem that includes Tanzania’s Serengeti) were too exciting to pass up – the abundant wildlife, resident and migratory, and the indigenous ethnic peoples are an unmatched experience.
