About this Event
February 3 (Thursday) 1:00pm – 2:30pm, Hybrid Seminar: Clemson’s First Rhodes Scholar, Louise Franke: Clemson University made history this year when Louise Franke, a senior from Spartanburg with a major in biochemistry and a minor in philosophy, was named Clemson’s first-ever Rhodes Scholar. The Rhodes Scholarships, established in 1902, are considered to be the most prestigious and competitive awards granted to US students for two or three years of post-graduate study at Oxford University. Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. This year more than 2300 American students initiated applications. Nearly 900 were endorsed by their institutions. Only 32 were selected. In this hybrid seminar Louise will speak about her Rhodes journey, her program of study at Oxford, and her career aspirations following her Rhodes experience. We will also meet Ms. Robyn Curtis, Director of Major Fellowships, who guided Louise through the application process and served as her mentor.
