Interplay of electron's spin and charge degree of freedom

in the correlated quantum matter

Krzysztof Wohlfeld

University of Warsaw

Abstract: One of the key problems in condensed matter theory concerns the understanding of the high temperature superconductivity in the copper oxides. Despite almost 35 years of intensive research we still lack a convincing explanation of this phenomenon. Yet, it is widely believed that the first step here requires understanding the peculiar interplay between the electron's spin and charge degree of freedom in these correlated quantum materials. In this talk, I plan to give an overview of some of the most recent studies on the latter problem. In particular, I will describe in a pictorial manner why the electron's spin and charge degree of freedom can separate in a one-dimensional lattice and whether the same could happen in the two-dimensional planes of the copper oxides.

Bio: Krzysztof Wohlfeld is a condensed matter theorist who graduated in 2009 from the Jagiellonian University of Cracow (Poland). After that he spent his first postdoc as a Humboldt fellow in IFW Dresden (Germany) and his second postdoc at Stanford University. He came back to Poland in 2015 as an assistant professor at the University of Warsaw. He is mostly interested in studying strongly correlated electron systems, in order to better understand the onset of the emerging phases and collective excitations of high temperature superconducting copper oxides and other transition metal oxides.
