About this Event

https://www.clemson.edu/emerituscollege/index.htmlThe world’s population is expected to grow to almost ten million by 2050. To meet food needs, experts predict food supplies will need to double. A major challenge is that gasses from the activities of man have caused the earth’s atmosphere to heat up to record levels. This is called Global Warming and results mostly from the release of carbon dioxide in the burning of fossil fuels. Other gases such as nitrous oxide and methane participate in trapping heat from the sun. Gases trapping the sun’s heat have increased the intensity and duration of weather events like droughts, floods, wildfires, tornados, and hurricanes. This has affected not only the production of food, but its processing, transportation, and distribution. The most significant problems have been in Africa, China, India, Central and South America and Australia. The insecurity of food availability has increased to the point that malnutrition, starvation, and political unrest are appearing increasingly. In the US, shortages are rare, but extended weather events or other emergencies like the Covid pandemic have caused some food items to experience shortages and price inflation. This presentation will concentrate on production and marketing innovations that are in place to help sustain our food supply. Also discussed will be climate change effects on food production migration patterns currently happening in the US. Example is a 4000-acre potato megafarm which migrated from Michigan to Aiken County, SC in 2013. Water for irrigation, public reaction, and future growth in megafarms will be discussed.
