Please join the African American Burial Ground, A. P. Calhoun Family Plot, and Woodland Cemetery Historic Preservation Project at Clemson University to commemorate the 3rd annual Carrel Cowan-Ricks Day of Remembrance during Women's Celebration Month on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Each year we honor Professor Carrel Cowan-Ricks as one of a few Black female archaeologists in the US in the early 1990s and for accelerating our current-day work for the cemetery project.

 

12pm-1pm - Food and Forum featuring Creative Inquiry (CI) Team

Freeman Hall Annex (211 Fernow Street)

There will be a free student luncheon in the Freeman Hall Annex. Please join us to hear from the cemetery CI Team talk about their research in history and archaeology. Dr. David Markus will show artifacts collected during the 1990s archeological dig Cowan-Ricks conducted in the cemetery. RSVP to attend!

 

2pm-3pm - Cemetery Tour with special guests

Meet at Woodland Cemetery (Williamson Road Entrance)

This free walking tour of the cemetery at Clemson University will feature special guests Robert Kemp ("The Bottoms/The River"), Morgan Molosso-Crocker/Sarah Adams (African American Burial Ground Fenced-In Area), and Carrel Cowan-Ricks' Students (West Side of the Cemetery) to help our cemetery team with the storytelling. It is free and open to the public. Parking available at the cemetery.

 

5pm - "30 Years on Cemetery Hill: The Past, Present, and Future of Research"

Hendrix Student Center, Ballroom A (2nd floor)

The keynote program will feature a panel presentation with members of the cemetery project and Carrel Cowan-Ricks' students.  It is free and open to the public. Parking available across from the Hendrix Student Center.
