The Research, Design, and Construction of Historic Clothing at Fort Hill Plantation
The Creative Inquiry (CI) project under the direction of Professor Kendra Johnson analyzed the various types of clothing worn by the privileged and the enslaved on a small upcountry plantation in South Carolina. Through research, pattern drafting, and 19th century sewing techniques, students learned how to design and construct representative garments worn by the inhabitants of Fort Hill. The final outcome was the construction of representative garments that would have been worn by Anna Clemson, a house slave, and a field hand.
