4-H/FFA Swine Project Show

A York County exclusive project which welcomes youth from Chester and Lancaster counties.

Mission

The mission of SC 4-H Youth Development utilizes a learn by doing approach to empower youth to become healthy, productive, and contributing members of society.

Project

Sponsored by York County Farm Bureau and the C.H. and Anna E. Lutz Foundation, youth will learn the basic principles of animal science by owning and caring for swine, keeping production and financial records on one or more project animals, as well as demonstrating knowledge of feeding and management practices. Youth will be required to complete and return a project record form, write a short story, and submit thank you cards to sponsors.

Important Information

*The show will be for Market Hogs, either purebred or crossbred. Beginning weight should be between 60 to 75 pounds.

*It is unlawful to transport live swine on a public road or waterway within the State unless the swine have an official form of identification approved by the State Veterinarian and are transported in such a way that the swine is visible. Live swine transported without identification are presumed to have been taken from the wild and in violation of Section 50-16-25 Effective May 17, 2021

*This legislative rule means ALL DOMESTIC SWINE moving on South Carolina roads must have an approved ID tag. The South Carolina Veterinarian has listed Official USDA Identification as the approved form of identification for swine. Official USDA Identification has the US Shield and a nationally unique identification number. The two forms of Official USDA Identification are Brite tags or 840 electronic ID tags. All pigs enrolled in the project must be tagged before being transported.

*Should anyone wish to read the entire rule, see Title 47, Chapter 4 using this link: https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t47c004.php

For questions specific to this new law, contact Brian Beer bbeer@clemson.edu. We will be assisting families who obtain their own pig with this new tagging system. Pigs purchased through Clemson will be tagged appropriately.
