Summer Science Days II

This action-packed, hands-on camp covers a fun and fascinating array of biology and chemistry topics for rising 5th through 7th graders.  Parents, grandparents or guardians are welcome to enroll and participate!  All classes will be held on campus in the Clemson University Life Sciences Outreach Center, G-26 Jordan Hall.  Drop off/pick up in G-26 Jordan Hall.

Summer Science Days I and II do not need to be taken in order or together. Camps for older students are available, seeDNA and Cells (7th - 9th grade) or Biotechnology, Health & Society (9th-12th grade). Labs for elementary or special groups can be arranged– contact Professor Vicki Corbin to discuss.

Fun Food Chemistry!  Tuesday
We need food to survive, but how does it actually give us energy? And how do we get energy by eating bananas, but not from cotton balls or sand? You will learn the biochemistry of food—fats, carbohydrates and proteins—and digestion. And you'll use chemistry to transform food into non-food: bouncy balls, slime and other disgusting playthings!

The Microscopic World of Cells  Wednesday
You will look at many weird and wonderful cells using microscopes and learn how cell structures (inside and out) are used in the cells. You will build edible cell models to explore the different structure and functions found in plant and animal cells. And you'll learn how microscopes work by making your very own!

Microbial Marvels  Thursday
Microorganisms are everywhere! You will learn what they are and how they grow. And, under the right conditions they multiply fast! You'll also find out where they live, including in, on, and all around us! Luckily, most of them are beneficial. Last, you will learn how antibiotics work and how they affect both microbes and their human hosts.
