Rain Garden Maintenance Day

Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 8:00am to 10:00am

380 General Dr, Sumter, SC

Sumter Master Gardeners and other volunteers! We need your help on May 7th to spruce up the rain garden at Patriot Park for summer. Please join us from 8:00-10:00 AM for some garden maintenance. We will be spreading mulch, weeding, and planting new plants. Please dress appropriate to the weather and prepare to get your hands in the dirt. We will provide drinking water, gloves, and tools, but you are encouraged to bring your own gloves, rakes, shovels and gardening tools, if you have them. Thank you!

What is a rain garden? Rain gardens are similar to regular planting beds, but are set lower than the surrounding ground and placed so that water naturally flows into them from surrounding parking lots, streets, roofs, or lawns. The water slowly soaks into the ground over 24-48 hours. Soil microbes and plants filter pollution from the water, making the water cleaner and recharging groundwater tables.
