Small, and often overlooked, lichens have a rich and vibrant natural and cultural history in addition to being key indicators of environmental health. Lichens exhibit a vast diversity of color and form; some are plain and undistinguished, others are more elaborate, and suggestive of a fairytale world fit for elfin creatures and mythical beasts.
