OFFICIAL MEDIA PRESS RELEASE:

Artwork for Life Sciences Building, chosen by students, to be dedicated Friday

The artwork implemented by Clemson University students for the Life Sciences Facility will be dedicated at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Atelier InSite, a Creative Inquiry class tasked with bringing public artwork to Clemson University, selected artwork by San Francisco-based artist Klari Reis to be featured in the Life Sciences building.

“Atelier InSite is uniquely Clemson because we’re engaging students as the primary generator of this project,” said art professor David Detrich, adviser to the Atelier InSite groups. “You see a lot of top-20 schools with similar programs, but those are not student-driven. We want to establish a precedent for student engagement in similar programs.”

The artwork is titled “The Clemson Genus Project” and is composed of 600 unique, vividly colored circular petri dish paintings. The paintings span three floors of the Life Sciences building.

Reis allowed the public to name each of the 600 individual paintings. There will be a legend on display so visitors can see the names given to each one.

Atelier InSite received more than 200 applications from artists, but they chose Reis because of her attention to detail and ability to fulfill the goals of the project.

“Klari’s proposal was the most stunning, most eye-catching and related most to the goals of the project,” said Brittany Lamont, a senior preprofessional health studies major and member of the Atelier InSite team. “Even from her initial application, among the 218, her attention to detail pulled our attention. She always found ways to intrigue us, conspicuously and inconspicuously.”

This event is open to the public and the Atelier InSite students and Reis will be available to answer questions.
