Documenting the Natural World: A Selection of Illustrated 18th and 19th Century Books From Clemson University’s Special Collections Library

Many people are familiar with John James Audubon’s beautiful illustrations in his The Birds of America volumes from the early 1800s. But Audubon’s bird book was just one of a number of publications from the 18th and 19th centuries with vivid images of plants and animals.  This exhibit in the lobby of Cooper Library includes works such as William Curtis’ Botanical Magazine, John Edwards Holbrook’s North American Herpetology, Thomas Say’s American Entomology, and Jacob Bigelow’s American Medical Botany, as well as Audubon’s other work The Quadrupeds of North America.  These publications represent a widespread desire to understand and systematically classify the natural world caused by an increase in exploration and the discovery of many species new to science in the 17th and 18th centuries.  Also included are several illustrated reports from federally-funded expeditions through the U.S. territories and abroad. The exhibit is on display through April 21, 2014.
